Eye safety

  • Never look at the partial phases without ISO 12312-2 certified solar filters.
  • Only during totality (when the Sun is fully covered) is it safe to view with the naked eye — and only then.
  • Phone cameras and binoculars need proper solar filters too; sensors and eyes can burn in seconds.
  • Inspect filters for scratches or pinholes before use. Damaged glasses go in the trash.
  • Children need active supervision — treat the Sun like a welding arc.

Hunter field notes

  • Weather is the #1 variable. Prefer arid inland sites over coastal marine layers when the path allows.
  • Arrive a day early. Traffic gridlock on eclipse morning is common near popular path towns.
  • Practice your setup the day before: focus, exposure, filter on/off choreography.
  • Have a Plan B site 50–100 km along the path in case of local cloud.
  • Partial phases last hours — the brief total/annular show is minutes. Know your local C1–C4 times.
